Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told supporters of President Donald Trump, “You can’t be MAGA if you’re anti-Israel,” during an interview with Breitbart on Thursday.
In an interview with Breitbart senior editor-at-large Joel Pollak, Netanyahu blamed growing criticism of Israel among the political right on NGOs “primarily from Europe, but also from Qatar.”
“Some of these people call themselves MAGA. They’re not MAGA,” claimed Netanyahu. “If you support Iran, Iran tried to kill President Trump twice, not once, but twice. Iran has put a price on his head… That’s Iran. Iran has murdered, has killed and wounded more Americans, thousands of them, in Iraq and in Afghanistan with their explosive devices. They killed 251 American Marines in Beirut. They bombed American embassies. They burn American flags. They chant, ‘Death to America.’ The first thing they did when this regime took power was to take over 50 hostages in the American embassy.”
Netanyahu insisted, “Iran wants to annihilate the United States. Israel is the best ally of the United States,” before declaring, “Israel is fighting Iran, and you can’t be MAGA if you’re pro Iran, you can’t be MAGA if you’re anti-Israel. President Trump understands this, and he stands very strongly with us.”
Israel and Netanyahu have faced growing criticism from Trump’s Make America Great Again base in recent months, including former Breitbart executive chairman and White House chief strategist Steve Bannon.
Bannon responded to the interview in a social media post, writing, “American Citizens Do Not Give 2 F***s About Your Thoughts on MAGA, or What Our Citizens Need to Believe—They Care About Exposing Your Pathological Lies in Order to Keep Us Out of Your Next War.”
In June, Bannon tore into Netanyahu for trying to push the United States into a conflict with Iran, questioning, “Who in the hell are you to lecture the American people? Who are you to lecture the American people? The American people are not going to tolerate it. Not going to put up with it. Who are you to jam us into this situation, which you knew you couldn’t finish the job, or if you can, go finish it!”
Bannon went on to accuse Fox News host Mark Levin and other hosts at the network of being “a mouthpiece and a propaganda arm for a foreign government,” before warning, “Netanyahu can’t be trusted.”
“The Netanyahu government is out of control,” he said. “They’re not trustworthy. The Netanyahu crowd is not trustworthy. They’re not worthy of our trust.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, and former Republican congressman Matt Gaetz have also been vocal critics of Israel, AIPAC, and Netanyahu, with Greene recently accusing Israel of carrying out a genocide in Gaza.
