POLL: Biden Up 4 on Trump in Virginia Despite Dismal -28 Approval Rating

A new survey conducted by Roanoke College in Virginia paints a stunning picture of the unpopularity of the two likely major party candidates for president.
According to the poll of 705 Old Dominion residents, President Joe Biden could be expected to beat his predecessor Donald Trump by four points (47%-43%) if the general election were held tomorrow, despite the fact that a strong majority of voters disapprove of Biden’s performance in the Oval Office.
Just 33% of respondents said they approve of Biden, while 61% say they disapprove of him. Still, Biden’s built-in partisan advantage in the state — he bested Trump by more than 10 points there in 2020 — would be enough to carry him to victory.
That advantage, however, would evaporate if former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley somehow managed to edge out Trump for the Republican nomination. She would prevail over the incumbent by 9 points (49%-40%).

While Biden would have a four point advantage with independents over Trump, Haley beats him out among that cohort by five points.
Haley’s chances of pulling off an upset remain extremely slim, though. Trump has won every primary contest to date and the Roanoke College poll found that she would lose to Trump by 60 points in the Republican primary there.
The results track with broader polling trends that have emerged during the 2024 presidential cycle, as both Biden and Trump are enormously unpopular.
While Virginia still would likely swing toward Biden, pervasive disappointment in Biden’s performance as president and concerns over his mental state has led to Trump building sustained leads in a number of swing states.
A set of polls conducted by Morning Consult at the end of January found that Trump would beat Biden in North Carolina, Nevada, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Arizona.
