The Montana Republican Party uninvited a pro-Trump GOP operative and online influencer as the keynote speaker from its winter kickoff convention in February.
Alex Bruesewitz, a close ally of Donald Trump Jr, announced on X (formerly Twitter) he had been dropped from the event, writing, “I was scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the upcoming @MTGOP convention. But I was just informed that my speech was CANCELED because I criticized Rep. Matt Rosendale for being disloyal to President Trump.”
Bruesewitz concluded by telling his nearly 400,000 followers that Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT) “is a swampy disgrace!” He later posted another tweet outlining his gripes with Rosendale and accusing the Montana Freedom Caucus of
“engaging in leftist tactics and canceling me.”
The Republican Party is gearing up for a potentially bruising primary fight between Rosendale, one of Montana’s two members of Congress, and ex-Navy SEAL and aerospace millionaire Tim Sheehy.
Rosendale is expected to officially announce his Senate run and join Sheehy in the primary in March. Republicans are eyeing Sen. John Tester’s (D-MT) seat as a top pickup opportunity in 2024 and the National Republican Senatorial Committee led by Montanan’s other senator, Steve Daines (R-MT), has already put its support behind Sheehy.
Over the weekend, Sheehy also picked up the endorsement of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), which sparked a wild few days of infighting on the right. Allies of Rosendale, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, attacked Greene online and she hit back hard by accusing Rosendale of being a “grifter” and “not loyal” to Donald Trump.
Bruesewitz parroted Greene’s message, which ruffled feathers in the Montanan GOP and eventually led to him being uninvited from the party’s event.
The Washington Examiner noted that spat over Bruesewitz speaking in Montana is not only a sign of the primary battle to come, “but it’s also a sign of Rosendale’s worsening relationship with Trumpworld.”
“The rift began when Rosendale declined to take Trump’s call in January as one of the last holdouts to Kevin McCarthy’s speakership on the House floor. His October endorsement of Trump, which came after months of speculation, fractured the relationship further,” added the Examiner’s David Sivak.
Bruesewitz quickly found support from inside MAGA world, as prominent figures denounced the Montana GOP for snubbing him:
