Town Hall Attendee Gives Nikki Haley ‘a Chance to Redeem Yourself After Last Night’s Slavery Thing’

A town hall attendee in Lebanon, New Hampshire gave Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley a “chance to redeem yourself after last night’s slavery thing” on Thursday, a day after Haley refused to acknowledge slavery’s role in the Civil War.

During a Q&A with Haley, the attendee said, “This is a chance to redeem yourself after last night’s slavery thing. Would you be able to say categorically that you will not accept being Trump’s vice president?”

Haley replied, “I could say to you what you want to hear, and you could go check that box and go do whatever, but I’m going to continue to tell you my truth, and the truth that I have always told the truth, even when I was in the administration. President Trump and I worked well together. Why? Because I told him the truth.”

She continued, “If you want to talk about vice president, I will tell you this now. I’ve said before. I don’t play for second. I’ve never played for second. I’m not gonna start now.”

Haley refused to explicitly rule out a role as Trump’s running mate in 2024.

Despite growing speculation that Haley could serve as vice president in a second Trump administration, the idea has been criticized by many of Trump’s allies, including former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, former Trump adviser Roger Stone, and Donald Trump Jr., who told Newsmax he would “go to great lengths to make sure” that such a thing would not happen.

Haley received heavy backlash on Wednesday after she refused to acknowledge slavery’s role in the Civil War during a town hall in Berlin, New Hampshire.

After a member of the audience asked, “What was the cause of the United States Civil War?” Haley replied, “I mean, I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was gonna run. The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do.”

She then added, “I mean, I think it always comes down to the role of government.”

“In 2023 it’s astonishing to me that you would answer that question without mentioning the word slavery,” the audience member responded, to which Haley questioned, “What do you want me to say about slavery?”

Haley’s remarks were criticized by Republicans and Democrats alike, including President Joe Biden, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
