President Donald Trump dropped an eyebrow-raising post on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, announcing that he will sit down with The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg for an interview.
Goldberg has long been a target for Trump’s vitriol, having published several of the more damaging reports on Trump’s time in office.
“Later today I will be meeting with, of all people, Jeffrey Goldberg, the Editor of The Atlantic, and the person responsible for many fictional stories about me, including the made-up HOAX on “Suckers and Losers” and, SignalGate, something he was somewhat more “successful” with,” Trump began, referring to Goldberg’s reporting – complete with screenshots – on his being included in a group chat with Trump national security officials discussing the bombing of Yemen.
Trump also referred to Goldberg’s report on Trump’s former chief of staff and ex-Marine Corps general, John Kelly, relaying how Trump insulted fallen soldiers while visiting military cemeteries in Europe. Trump added:
Jeffrey is bringing with him Michael Scherer and Ashley Parker, not exactly pro-Trump writers, either, to put it mildly! The story they are writing, they have told my representatives, will be entitled, “The Most Consequential President of this Century.” I am doing this interview out of curiosity, and as a competition with myself, just to see if it’s possible for The Atlantic to be “truthful.” Are they capable of writing a fair story on “TRUMP”? The way I look at it, what can be so bad – I WON!
Trump attacked Goldberg in late March over his reporting on being included in the Signal chat, telling reporters in the White House, “That’s an app that a lot of people use. And somebody got on. I happen to know the guy is a total sleazebag. The Atlantic is a failed magazine, does very, very poorly. Nobody gives a damn about it.”
