Trump Confronted Outside Court About Becoming House Speaker: ‘Would You Take The Job?’
Donald Trump was confronted by reporters outside the Manhattan court hearing his civil fraud case, about whether he would take the job as House Speaker now that the chair has been vacated.
At least three Republican House members have floated Trump’s name for Speaker since Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) spearheaded the rebellion to oust McCarthy. They are: Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX), Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL), and MAGA acolyte Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).
“A lot of people have asked me about it,” Trump said. “I’m focused — You know, we’re leading. I’m sure you don’t read too much in the papers — we’re leading by, like, 50 points for president. You know, my focus is totally on that. If I can help them during the process, I would do it.”
MSNBC’s Ana Cabrera asked political analyst Basil Smikle if the suggestion had “any legs” since the speaker does not have to be a member of Congress.
“No, it doesn’t have any legs, and I would say if anything even remotely similar to what Donald Trump or anybody else that actually ascends to that position or is even in the running, I think you would see a mass exodus from the House by Republicans.
“It is just a ridiculous statement for anybody to sort of even float that. But it really does show you…how desperate the Republicans are. Without a plan, without real succession plan for leadership, they’re in a situation where I don’t see how they retain majority in the House or the Senate. Whatever chance they had for that in 2024.”
On Tuesday, Rep. Nehls promised to nominate Trump for speaker when the House reconvenes following a week-long recess, according to Forbes. And Fox News’ Sean Hannity said on Tuesday night’s show that his “sources” claimed Trump had been contacted by the GOP about the unlikely scenario.
Greene tweeted Tuesday that Trump was “the only candidate” she was currently supporting.
Even if Trump were interested, his legal troubles would most likely preclude him from serving as speaker. Forbes laid out the GOP conference rules, “that state any leadership member indicted for a felony that carries a sentence of at least two years ‘shall step aside.'”
Forbes added, “Trump has been charged with 91 criminal counts this year that carry a combined maximum sentence of more than 700 years in prison.”
