CNN’s Camerota and Haberman Defend Sarah Sanders and Kellyanne Against ‘Savagery’ of Media Attacks
CNN’s New Day had on New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman to discuss the fate of H.R. McMaster, President Donald Trump’s national security adviser who appears to be teetering on the edge of a White House exit.
Reports dropped last night that Trump was ready to oust McMaster — until White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders put a stop to the hysteria with a carefully worded statement.
“Just spoke to @POTUS and Gen. H.R. McMaster,” she tweeted, “contrary to reports they have a good working relationship and there are no changes at the NSC.”
CNN’s Chris Cuomo at first lambasted Sanders, suggesting that if Trump ultimately decides to fire McMaster, she “would have no credibility.”
“If it happens today, you will know either she just lies to promote the agenda of the day, or she doesn’t know what’s going on,” Cuomo added.
Haberman pushed back on that, stating, “I think two people who get attacked most are Sarah Sanders and Kellyanne Conway and I don’t think that’s fair.”
“This stems from the president,” she added.
Cuomo responded that “when it comes to Sanders and Kellyanne Conway, they make their own choices about what they say and what they don’t. I’m sure they get heavy pressure.”
“I’m with Maggie,” CNN’s Alisyn Camerota said. “I think they get more criticism from the public. Far more than the guys who go out and also say falsehoods and untruths.”
“But like who? Because these are main players,” Cuomo shot back.
Camerota listed off Anthony Scaramucci and Sebastian Gorka, who Cuomo noted he “beat him up on this show” on New Day.
Haberman contended that while that is true, “savagery in some of the attacks” is more intense with women who work for the president.
Cuomo conceded that when Saturday Night Live “first went after Sarah Huckabee Sanders and it was about how she looked and dressed, that is obnoxious.”
“And that happens to Kellyanne all the time,” Cuomo noted, “and that’s wrong, not question about it.”
