‘I Think He’s Talking About White People?’ Andrea Mitchell Roasts Trump For Only Wanting Migrants From ‘Nice Countries’

MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell mocked former president Donald Trump’s recent comments that he’d be happy to let people from “nice countries” into the United States.

Trump’s remarks were tailored to the wealthy crowd that helped him reportedly gain $50.5 million on Saturday.

“Mr. Trump teased extending his signature tax cuts when meeting with those wealthy donors at Mar-a-Lago,” Mitchell began. “And The New York Times…is reporting he again defended wanting immigrants from, quote, ‘nice countries’ like Denmark and Switzerland. I think he’s talking about white people?” she said with a slight chuckle.

MSNBC contributor Robert Gibbs said, “At this fundraiser, of course, you hear Donald Trump unvarnished. Not that he’s ever all that varnished to begin with, right?” He continued:

But he’s very clear when he says things like, “I don’t want to have immigrants from places like Yemen and Mexico, but I’d rather have them from places like Denmark and Switzerland.”  Everybody knows what he’s talking about. It’s not a very subtle formula there. He did that when he was president. He said that in private when he was president. He said, “Why can’t we have more immigrants from Norway and less from Africa,” for instance. That was a formulation he used while he was president.

So, this is in keeping with his immigration stance from the beginning. It’s not that he’s against immigration. His own wife is an immigrant. His own wife’s mother came in, we saw on documents released the other day, through chain migration, a process that he himself criticizes. He’s against immigration of people who are not from “nice countries” like Denmark and Switzerland.

The New York Times reported Monday about Trump’s fundraising comments:

He then appeared to refer to an episode during his presidency when he drew significant criticism after an Oval Office meeting with federal lawmakers about immigration during which he described Haiti and some nations in Africa as “shithole countries,” compared with places like Norway.

“And when I said, you know, Why can’t we allow people to come in from nice countries, I’m trying to be nice,” Mr. Trump said at the dinner, to chuckles from the crowd. “Nice countries, you know like Denmark, Switzerland? Do we have any people coming in from Denmark? How about Switzerland? How about Norway?”
He continued, “And you know, they took that as a very terrible comment, but I felt it was fine.”

Mr. Trump went on to say that there were people coming from Yemen, “where they’re blowing each other up all over the place.”
