WATCH: James Comer Rages at FBI to Maria Bartiromo, Defends Informant Indicted for Lying About the Bidens
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) insisted that the FBI ha behaved in a “very suspicious” manner in his dealings with them and defended an FBI informant who has now been indicted for lying about the Biden family’s business activity in Ukraine during an appearance on Fox Business Tuesday morning.
Last summer, Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) released a document in which an FBI informant alleged that Joe Biden was involved in a bribery scandal connected to his son Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine.
“The FBI’s Biden Bribery Record tracks closely with the evidence uncovered by the Oversight Committee’s Biden family influence peddling investigation. In the FBI’s record, the Burisma executive claims that he didn’t pay the ‘big guy’ directly but that he used several bank accounts to conceal the money,” said Comer at the time. “That sounds an awful lot like how the Bidens conduct business: using multiple bank accounts to hide the source and total amount of the money.”
But last week, Special Counsel David Weiss, the prosecutor looking into potential criminal wrongdoing by Hunter Biden, charged that informant, Alexander Smirnov, with having lied about Joe Biden’s involvement in such a scheme.
Comer discussed the indictment during a conversation with Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business Tuesday morning. After Bartiromo asked Comer about significance of the indictment, Comer said that Smirnov’s credibility had been vouched for by FBI Director Christopher Wray, not Republicans.
“We never knew the identity of the FBI informant. All we knew — Jim Jordan and I — was that Christopher Wray said that this informant was one of their most trusted, highest paid in the Bureau,” insisted Comer. “They had successfully used this informant to prosecute criminals in the past and he had been with the Bureau over a decade. So that’s what Christopher Wray told Jim Jordan and I about the informant. That’s all we knew about the informant.”
Comer then defended Smirnov by noting that “the FBI paid him to be a spy in Russia.”
“They indicted him because he was communicating with Russia, but that’s what they paid him for over ten years to do! So I don’t know anything about Smirnov, but you know, the circumstances around his indictment and his re-arrest and the and the changing of the original indictment by Weiss is very concerning, because everything that that I’ve had to do with the FBI has been very suspicious throughout this investigation,” he added. “The trust level that I have with the FBI is zero, Maria. And look, we just, we’re following the money. Smirnov never was a key part of this investigation, never was a part of the investigation because we couldn’t-”
“It was just one more confirmation for you,” offered Bartiromo.
“Yeah, absolutely, you investigate every tip. Charles Grassley brought this tip. You know, Smirnov said that Burisma paid Hunter Biden $5 million. That’s true! We found that. He said in there that the money was wired to various bank accounts,” replied Comer. “That’s true, so we know that. The part that has never been confirmed is about Joe Biden or not. And look, we’re still looking and finding new accounts from Joe Biden every day. At the end of the day, we know the Bidens have taken, you know, over $20 million from our adversaries around the world. And they have failed to say one single thing they did to receive that money.”
