WATCH: The Viral Abortion Ad That Kentucky Governor Beshear Credited For His Win

The Democratic Governor of Kentucky Andy Beshear won reelection on Tuesday night and one of the first people he thanked in his victory speech was a young woman named Hadley Duvall, who appeared in an ad for his campaign.

Duvall, a survivor of rape, addressed Beshear’s Republican opponent, Daniel Cameron, directly in the ad that went viral online and made Duvall a prominent voice in the campaign.

“I was raped by my stepfather after years of sexual abuse. I was 12. Anyone who believes there should be no exceptions for rape and incest could never understand what it’s like to stand in my shoes,” Duvall, now in her twenties, says directly into the camera, adding:

This is to you, Daniel Cameron. To tell a 12-year-old girl she must have the baby of her stepfather who raped her is unthinkable. I’m speaking out because women and girls need to have options. Daniel Cameron would give us none.

“Because of her courage, this commonwealth is going to be a better place and people are going to reach out for the help they need,” Beshear said during his Tuesday night victory speech after his race was called. Beshear won a significant 5-point victory over Cameron in the deep red state, which has accurately predicted which party will win the White House in the last twenty years.

The Washington Post highlighted the impact abortion had in the Kentucky governor race, calling it “an important through line” and reporting that “Beshear put millions behind ads attacking his Republican challenger, Daniel Cameron, on abortion.”

Cameron addressed Duvall during an appearance on Spectrum News 1 in early October, saying that his “heart goes out” to the “young lady” and that he appreciated her sharing her story.

“It wasn’t really to share my story just with him. It was to give victims a voice that they need,” Duvall told the Associated Press in a subsequent interview. She concluded, “Daniel Cameron said himself that he cannot comprehend how traumatic the experience was for me and he’s right. So I just want to know why he feels so entitled to force victims who have stories like mine to carry a baby of their rapist? It should be their choice.”
