Reporter Asks Chargers Coach Who’s Down 42-0 at Halftime, ‘How Do You Describe the Performance of Your Team?’

The Las Vegas Raiders hung 42 points on the Los Angeles Chargers defense in the first half of Thursday Night Football. Meanwhile, the Justin Herbert-less Chargers mustered zero points in the first two quarters.

Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell threw four first-half touchdowns as Vegas ran roughshod over a porous defense.

Despite one of the historically worst showings in an NFL half, TNF sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung approached Chargers coach Brandon Staley as his team headed to the locker at the end of the second quarter. Here is how that went:

HARTUNG: Brandon, how do you describe the performance of your team in the first half?

STALEY: This wasn’t good enough. That wasn’t us out there. You know, did not come ready to play. You know, second half we gotta fight for pride. But uh, this is a good group and we gotta regroup at halftime, come out and try to play a better second half.

HARTUNG: Thank you, Coach.

“Appreciate the fact that he even stopped by for that interview,” Al Michaels said back up in the booth.

“No doubt,” replied Kirk Herbstreit.

“A lot of guys wouldn’t,” Michaels noted.

The Raiders picked up where they left off on the first drive of the third quarter. They marched down the field and scored on a touchdown pass from wide receiver Jakobi Meyers to Davante Adams to make it 49-0. (It was Meyers’ second completion of the game.)

Los Angeles did respond on the next play from scrimmage with a 79-yard bomb from Easton Stick to Joshua Palmer for Stick’s first career touchdown pass.

The Raiders ended up winning 63-21 and improved to 6-8 while the Chargers dropped to 5-9.
