Tom Steyer Town Hall Attendee Asks: What’s The Difference Between Trump and Hitler?
On Thursday, progressive billionaire Tom Steyer held a Town Hall in Iowa when an audience member compared President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler.
“Through all of this, and through the time [Trump’s] been president, he reminds me of Hitler,” a woman in the audience named Sally said, prompting some claps and shouts from the audience.
She continued on: “I just keep thinking: what’s the difference between him and Hitler…Hitler really strikes me, and you just mentioned what he’s doing to families at the border. That’s what Hitler did – tore families apart.”
Steyer, who ran ads calling for Trump’s impeachment during this year’s State of the Union, did not immediately reply.
Then after a moment, Steyer pushed back on the Hitler comparison, noting that while there are some similarities between POTUS and the Nazi dictator, Trump “hasn’t killed millions of people.”
“Mr. Trump has – he really is an incredibly skillful and talented communicator. He really is – which Hitler was, too. But let’s not – and I think the reason people push back against the Hitler comparison, regardless of any similarities, is Hitler ended up killing millions and millions of people,” Steyer said.
Then after admitting “Trump has shown a disregard for our law” and “has shown a disrespect for the idea of law,” he repeated that, “he hasn’t killed millions of people.”
The response was clearly not what the audience wanted to hear.
“I agree. Look, that’s why we want to impeach him,” Steyer said to the restless crowd, before adding, “We’d like to end it here, while it’s still okay.”
