President Donald Trump has been providing updates on the condition of Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who was shot in the hip during the shooting at a House GOP baseball practice in Alexandria, VA early Wednesday.
James T. Hodgkinson, the 66-year-old shooter, opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing for the annual House baseball game, set to be held Thursday night. Scalise, two Capitol Police officers, and another two staffers were wounded, before Hodgkinson was taken down in the shootout. He later died at the hospital.
In remarks delivered at the White House during the signing of an executive order, Trump opened by sending “thoughts and prayers” to Scalise and his family.
“It’s been much more difficult than people even thought at the time,” Trump said, ostensibly referring to reports that Scalise’s condition may have deteriorated.
“He’s in some trouble,” Trump continued. “But he’s a great fighter, and he’s going to be okay, we hope.”
Trump added that he visited Scalise and his family at the hospital Wednesday night, and “reassured them that the entire country is pulling for them, praying for them.”
“We got a lot of hearts in this country, great hearts, and they’re all sending their love and support to the Scalise family.”
It was first reported by a number of news outlets that Scalise was taken to Medstar Washington Hospital Center in stable condition — a statement from his office said he spoke with his wife and was in “good spirits” before undergoing surgery.
The hospital has released updates noting Scalise is in critical condition, after the shooting left him with “severe bleeding,” requiring “multiple units of blood transfusion” and “additional operations.”
Scalise had his third surgery on Thursday, which Politico notes is “routine for gunshot victims,” per “sources familiar with Scalise’s condition.”
Trump ended his remarks on Scalise by noting his shooting may have the silver lining of ending divides in American politics: “And Steve in his own way,” Trump said, “may have brought some unity to our long divided country. We’ve had a very, very divided country for many years, and I have a feeling that Steve has made a great sacrifice, but there could be some unity being brought to our country, let’s hope so.”
