9/11 Family Member Implores Biden to Declassify Documents: ‘Be Our Champion, Mr. President, This Is a Direct Appeal to You’

The son of a man who died at the World Trade Center in the 9/11 attacks made a direct plea to President Joe Biden on CNN Friday night.

At issue for Brett Eagleson and many others whose loved ones died in the attacks 20 years ago, are classified documents that they say will show the culpability of Saudi leaders. Eagleson is one of nearly 1,800 people personally impacted by the 9/11 attacks who signed a statement saying they will not welcome Biden’s participation in 9/11-related events unless he declassifies those documents.

“We want to see President Biden stand with us and stand up for American citizens,” Eagleson told CNN guest host Michael Smerconish. “It’s been too long. It’s been 20 years. And the 9/11 families deserve justice and closure.”

Eagleson claimed the Department of Justice has “significant evidence” showing that the Saudi government “materially supported” the 19 hijackers who carried out the attacks, 15 of whom were from Saudi Arabia. Eagleson called on Biden to break with his predecessors and classify the alleged documents.

“Be our champion, Mr. President,” Eagleson pleaded. “This is a direct appeal to you. Help us in this fight. Stand by our side. Allow us to have the justice and closure that we deserve.”

Smerconish asked, “What is it that you think would be shown?”

Eagleson pointed to a sworn affidavit by FBI agent Stephen Moore in which he stated, “Based on evidence we gathered during the course of our investigation, I concluded that diplomatic and intelligence personnel of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia knowingly provided material support to the two 9/11 hijackers and facilitated the 9/11 plot. My colleagues in our investigation shared that conclusion.”

Smerconish then asked why four successive presidents would refuse to declassify documents that could uncover the alleged truth about Saudi involvement in the attacks.

He responded:

I don’t know the answer to that question. But here’s the thing. Democrats and Republicans can agree on nothing these days. What the executive branch of government is doing is so egregious that you have Senator Chuck Schumer, Senator Cornyn and Senator Grassley and my senator – I’m so proud of – Senator Blumenthal, coming together to agree on legislation called the 9/11 Transparency Act which was just released yesterday. So President Biden’s own political leaders, the leaders of the Democratic Party, are calling upon President Biden to do the good thing for once and for all [and] stand with the families. He could be the real hero here. He could be the hero that we need. And just think about it. Politically for him why wouldn’t he do it? It’s a no-brainer.

“I wish you success in this,” Smerconish replied.
