Ari Melber and GOP Rep. Face Off Over Shutdown: Trump ‘Completely Failed’ at Promise Mexico Would Pay for Wall

MSNBC’s Ari Melber spoke with Congressman Roger Marshall (R- Kansas) tonight about the ongoing shutdown fight, and Melber began by asking, “Donald Trump promised Mexico would pay for the wall. Why do you think he completely failed at that goal?”

Marshall said Trump’s goal all along has been border security and keeping America safe.

Melber asked if he’s receptive to “opening the government without the wall?” Marshall said that would be a “non-starter.”

At one point Melber brought up comments from Marshall in 2017 questioning the feasibility of a border wall. The congressman said he’s just pulling an “isolated quote” and told Melber, “I’ve always said that border security was the priority. I’ve never thought it was feasible to do 2000 miles of wall. I was willing to consider it… You’re really getting way getting down in the needles in the haystack instead of staying focused on the problem.”

Melber responded, “I would call it accurate quotes from you.” Marshall again said he’s being taken out of context.
