‘Bleeding Trump for November’: Veteran Analyst Argues Haley’s Support is ‘Flashing Red’ Warning for the GOP
Veteran Financial Times journalist Edward Luce sounded the alarm over Donald Trump’s 2024 general election prospect on MSNBC Monday morning.
In a discussion about Nikki Haley winning 40 percent of the vote in Saturday’s GOP presidential primary in South Carolina, which Trump won decisively, Luce noted that the result is actually a “flashing red signal” for Trump.
“We’ve got this Trump is crushing the nomination narrative going on it. It is certainly true in terms of mathematical delegate counts. And of course, winner takes all mathematics that that Trump is crushing the nomination and he will be the nominee,” Luce said, adding:
But those numbers in terms of the popular vote, 40% after all this time knowing everything they could possibly know about Trump, not only voting for Haley, but saying that voting for Haley as a vote against Trump is really, really bad news. It’s a flashing red signal for Trump in November.
The more he locks up the Republican nomination, the more he jeopardizes his ability to win in November. So, you know, I don’t know what Haley’s motivations are, whether it’s 2028 or to be No Labels candidate, or just the amazing psychological boost of being the last person standing when exactly the rest of bending the knee and kissing the ring. But whatever it is, it’s bleeding Trump for November.
CNN exit polls on Saturday found that many Haley voters saw their vote as a way to oppose Trump. “While most Haley voters also said they were primarily motivated by support for her, a substantial minority – about 4 in 10 – said their vote was mostly a way to express opposition to Trump,” reported CNN over the weekend. “Although registered voters who didn’t participate in South Carolina’s Democratic primary were eligible to vote in the Republican contest, only about 5% of primary voters identified as Democrats,” added CNN, noting the vast majority of Haley’s voters were indeed Republicans.
