As Chris Cuomo mediated a passionate discussion about President Trump on Monday night, he took a moment to acknowledge his butchered comments today with regard to Raj Shah.
When Cuomo hosted CNN’s New Day panel discussion about Trump’s “sh*thole” remarks this morning, he partially forgot Shah’s name. Cuomo ended up getting scolded by White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders for brushing through the incident by referring to the White House Deputy Press Secretary as “Raj whatever-his-name-is.”
Cuomo hosted another conversation about Trump’s comments on Prime Time, and things got heated when Van Jones began sparring with David Urban. As the two discussed the racial elements and patterns of Trump’s behavior, Cuomo invoked his earlier flub while noting the blowback he’s been seeing.
“Why do I say his name slowly like that? Because another part of the distraction here is I forgot Raj’s last name this morning. I apologize for that. And then there wound up being a counternarrative: ‘Well, that makes you racist.'”
Cuomo hopped back into the debate immediately afterward, grilling Urban about those in Trump’s corner who have contested the reporting of Trump’s exact words during his immigration meeting.
Earlier in the day, Cuomo offered a Twitter statement about his faux pas, and it seems Sanders might be willing to let bygones be bygones.
Sorry for the mistake, Raj. Won’t happen again. Please know that you are welcome to come on the show anytime. https://t.co/kw669MfP0a
