CNN Guest Takes Sledgehammer to Segment on Trump’s ‘Ridiculous’ Kamala Harris Attack: ‘Can We Just Talk About How Ignorant This Whole Conversation Is?’
Democratic strategist Aisha Mills slammed former President Donald Trump over comments he made suggesting that Vice President Kamala Harris is not Black. Mills appeared exasperated that she was even participating in a discussion on the matter.
“I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black,” Trump said about Harris to a gathering of the National Association of Black Journalists on Wednesday. “And now she wants to be known as Black. So, I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?”
He added, “And then all of a sudden, she made a turn and she became a Black person.”
Trump’s comments were wrong for obvious reasons. Harris’s father was born in Jamaica and her late mother was born in India. She has identified as both Black and Indian because she is both Black and Indian.
Hours later, CNN’s Erin Burnett aired a clip of Harris in 2019 saying, “I’m Black, and I’m proud of being Black. And I was born Black, I will die Black.”
Republican operative David Urban responded to the clip by urging Burnett to “pull the tapes.”
“Look at the Sacramento Bee, which is I think the paper record in California,” Urban said. “[It] touts you know, first Indian American senator sworn in in the Senate in 2016. I mean, there are some articles out there that you can hang your hat on that says that she was of Southeast [sic] Asian descent and really played that part up. And look, she’s mixed race. She’s both.”
He then noted that his ancestors are Italian and Polish, and so, “I’m both.”
“We’re not talking about ancestors,” Mills replied. “Can we just talk about how ignorant this whole conversation is?”
“Yeah, I think we’re all amazed,” Burnett agreed.
“We’re not talking about ancestors off of a boat,” Mills continued. “We’re talking about a woman whose father was a Black Jamaican man whose mother happened to be an Indian woman. There are many people in this country who are biracial people bull who absolutely identify as the fullness of who they are. And the fact that you have someone who is a former president that’s running for president again that is making a mockery of the heritage of anybody is really the fine point on all of this that we should be talking about here. It is ridiculous.”
“Aisha, I agree with you,” Urban said. “It is ridiculous we’re talking about it and not talking about Kamala Harris’s record. And President Trump put himself in that position.”
