CNN’s John King Turns to Camera: ‘The President Thinks You’re Stupid’
CNN’s John King gave a message directly to the his audience on Tuesday, saying President Donald Trump is counting on them being “stupid” enough to fall for his numerous falsehoods.
Tuesday afternoon on Inside Politics, King brought up an MSNBC interview with Anthony Scaramucci this morning to promote his new book. During this interview, the former White House communications director seemed to trivialize Trump’s penchant for lying — saying the president won’t be toppled no matter how many times critics and the media call him out for falsehoods.
“When you guys are upset about it and listing all the lies and trying to explain you can’t get a tax cut done in 10 days, people are almost happy about the fact that he is a wrecking ball inside of Washington and smashing into this,” Scaramucci said. “If you want to beat the president, exposing his lies or explaining them to people is not going to beat the president.”
King was not impressed — though he noted that Scaramucci didn’t actually dispute the idea that the president lies. From there, King looked directly into the camera and offered this commentary:
“The president thinks you’re stupid. The president thinks people are stupid.”
TIME correspondent Molly Ball countered that most people are probably aware of Trump’s dishonesty by now, but his supporters stuck with him anyway since its baked into his character and he successfully appealed to their emotions.
