Former Trump Adviser on Wolff Book: I ‘Certainly, Probably’ Called Trump an Idiot
Sam Nunberg, a longtime former Trump adviser, appeared on ABC News to talk Michael Wolff’s bombshell new book on the White House — and said he probably did call the president an idiot.
Fire and Fury, Wolff’s yearlong look inside Trump World, has had a whirlwind press week thanks to its vast wealth of quotes from campaign staffers and White House officials trashing the president — and Nunberg was no exception, with Wolff reporting the former adviser called Trump an idiot and a fool.
When asked on ABC News’ The Briefing Room whether Wolff’s quotes of him were accurate, Nunberg declined the refute them outright.
“I did sit down with Michael. I’m not out here to criticize Michael, but I think Michael used flourish, I’ll put it, on the events I described,” Nunberg said.
“If you can get this idiot elected twice…you would achieve something like immortality in politics,” Wolff reported Nunberg saying to Steve Bannon of Trump.
Nunberg told ABC News that while he was not familiar with that quote, he explained it was likely a joke: “I certainly probably said that but he’s by no means an idiot, at all.”
Wolff’s latest column for the Hollywood Reporter also claims Nunberg said — “widely,” according to Wolff — to White House staffers that Trump is “just a fucking fool.”
Nunberg also sought to explain on ABC News a section of the book that alleges he struggled to teach a bored Trump basic elements of the Constitution before a debate.
“I wasn’t there to teach the president the Constitution. The president had a granular understanding of the Constitution, it was good enough,” he said. “What I was there for, it was around eight days before the first debate and I didn’t want him to have any gotcha questions.”
“When I sat with Michael, who I like a lot, these were very casual type conversations and dinners and lunches,” he said. “I’m not disputing what he writes in the totality, I’m just trying to give it a little more color.”
