‘Give Me a Break, Lady!’ Bill Maher Rips NPR Pres for Calling ‘Crazy Far-Left’ Outlet ‘Completely Unbiased’

HBO’s Bill Maher called out NPR president Katherine Maher – no relation – Friday night after she told lawmakers this past week her partially subsidized organization is nonpartisan.

The eal Time host called the outlet “crazy far-left” and, in response to Maher calling it “unbiased” sarcastically responded: “Give me a break, lady!”

Republicans on the House Oversight Committee grilled the heads of both NPR and PBS in a hearing – accusing them of a leftist bias. Both organizations receive some of their funding from the federal government.

Maher said in her year with NPR, she had “never seen any instance of political bias.”

Host Maher challenged his “namesake” on the claim Friday night.

“I also read my namesake Katherine Maher — head of NPR — and, you know, she said, ‘We’re completely unbiased,'” Maher told his audience. “Give me a break, lady.” He continued:

I mean, they’re crazy far left. So, I mean, I think we’re past, my view, we’re past the age really, where the government, first of all, why do we need to subsidize — why can’t we have outlets like this and we’re so polarized. These outlets became popular at a time when Republicans and Democrats didn’t hate each other and weren’t at each other’s throats and didn’t think each other was an existential threat in that world.

You can’t have places like this I think anymore. They have to be private.

During this past week’s testimony, NPR’s Maher called her organization “nonpartisan” and admitted editors had fumbled coverage of damming stories about Democrats by choosing not to cover them.
