GOP Rep Defends Corker: ‘More of My Colleagues Should Speak Out’ Against Trump
Outgoing congressman Charlie Dent says Bob Corker is hardly the only Congressional Republican who is dissatisfied with President Trump.
The Pennsylvania representative spoke on Monday with MSNBC’s Katy Tur, who asked him about how Corker and Trump have opened fire on each other in recent days. Dent said his colleagues privately share Corker’s opinions about Trump’s recklessness, and he’s glad the Tennessee senator gave voice to the concerns about chaos and White House dysfunction.
“I think more of my colleagues should speak out,” Dent said. “They say things privately they don’t say publicly. I said it publicly before I announced I wasn’t running [for re-election].”
Dent described how Trump’s endless controversies and insulting comments make it harder for Congress to focus on the administration’s legislative agenda. Dent continued to say that the president fails to provide leadership or policy knowledge because he keeps getting wrapped up in “side-shows” and rhetorical battles where national security is on the line.
“When you’re the President of the United States, your words are policy. People take those words very seriously, and I don’t think the president has learned that yet,” said Dent. “The president, I believe, has to be much more measured in his rhetoric, but good luck with that.”
