Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) appeared on CNN today, where he shared his thoughts on how he apparently ended the prospects for one of President Trump’s judicial nominees last week.
Kennedy recently interviewed Matthew Petersen about his nomination to the District Court for the District of Columbia, and that exchange went viral after the FEC commissioner was unable to answer basic questions about the legal system. The episode caused the senator to receive a great deal of media attention, and he was recently quoted saying “just because you’ve seen My Cousin Vinny doesn’t qualify you to be a federal judge.”
Now that Petersen has abandoned his effort to join the judiciary, CNN’s Chris Cuomo asked Kennedy for his thoughts, and the senator said he felt bad for Petersen even though he was not suited for the position.
“He’s a very smart guy, he’s honest, lots of integrity, but he doesn’t have any trial experience, and that’s what a trial judge, federal district court does,” said Kennedy.
Kennedy said he spoke to Trump and reached an understanding about why Petersen was unfit for the court. When Cuomo complimented Kennedy for his My Cousin Vinny reference, the senator insisted “it wasn’t personal.”
“I think Mr. Peterson is a very smart guy and very capable but, you know, you’re smart too, Chris, but I wouldn’t ask you to transplant a kidney in the morning, you know. Experience matters.”
