Graham Interrupts Barr Hearing With Message to Trump After Suicide Bombing in Syria: You ‘Set in Motion Enthusiasm by the Enemy’
During day two of the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the nomination of William P. Barr for Attorney General, committee chair Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) took a moment from the process to comment on President Trump‘s withdrawal plan for troops in Syria in light of this morning’s deadly suicide bombing.
Referencing prior testimony, Graham addressed the battle with ISIS.
“I’m glad you mentioned Iraq and other places where we’re fighting to help people,” he began. “There was an attack today on a restaurant, I think it’s the same restaurant I visited with the Kurds and arabs and others in Manbij, Syria, to hold on to some representative government, and unfortunately I believe some American advisors were killed there by ISIS.”
“So this is not the subject matter of the hearing, but I want to make a quick statement,” he said.
“My concern by the statements made by President Trump, is that you set in motion enthusiasm by the enemy we’re fighting. You make people we’re trying to help wonder about us. And as they get bolder, the people we’re trying to help are going to get more uncertain. We saw this in Iraq, and are now seeing it in Syria.”
“Every American wants our troops to come home, but I think all of us want to make sure that when they do come home, we’re safe,” said Graham. “I don’t know how we’re ever going to be safe if people over there can’t at least sit down and talk with each other.”
He referred back to his prior visit, saying that the only reason the Kurds and other groups were even in the restaurant was that the U.S. made it safe to do so, and added that the people there “just need our help.”
“To those who lost their lives today, in Syria, you were defending America in my view,” said Graham. “To those in Syria who are trying to work together, you’re providing the best and only hope for your country.”
“I hope the president will look long and hard about what we’re doing in Syria,” he concluded before returning to the subject of the hearing.
ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack in Manbij, Syria this morning, which claimed American lives and the lives of over a dozen others.
