Harris Faulkner Challenges Co-Host in Awkward Exchange: ‘Is That Your Polite Way of Saying That Blacks Only Matter’ in Swing States?
An otherwise mundane analysis of electoral politics took an awkward turn on Wednesday’s Outnumbered.
Co-host Harris Faulkner pointed to a Gallup poll showing Democrats’ generic approval rating among Black Americans was down to 47% in 2023 compared to 66% in 2020. She then aired a clip of Vice President Kamala Harris boasting about President Joe Biden pardoning tens of thousands of people federally convicted of marijuana possession.
“And so these are some of the things we have done that I think really do resonate with young people, with Black voters, with young Black voters, with young Black men,” the vice president said. “And there is more to do.”
Faulkner panned the comments.
“I don’t know if assuming most people smoke weed because you’re Black is really gonna help out,” Faulkner said to co-host Leslie Marshall. “But what say you, Leslie?”
Marshall replied by saying she’s from California and joking that “a majority of people smoke weed in California.”
She continued:
MARSHALL Whether you’re a Black voter, or, you know, a White voter, pink voter, whatever, it’s the economy. I mean, it’s the economy. And specifically in African American communities. As a Democrat, those numbers would worry me until I do a further deep dive with numbers and a breakdown. A lot of the erosion among the African American support that Joe Biden has had are in red states, which he’s not gonna get. Those are gonna go to the nominee, which most likely will be Donald Trump in my opinion. So, I would be more concerned if I saw that erosion in you know, states like where I live in California, other blue states–
FAULKNER: Is that your polite way of saying that Black voters only matter in the swing situations?
MARSHALL: No. Any voter, regardless– look, there’s a reality in numbers, right? You have your states that you know you’re gonna get. Joe Biden’s get California.
FAULKNER: I got it.
MARSHALL: Whoever’s the Republican nominee is gonna get Texas. So, what I’m saying is, people have sort of like got that. States you care about are those swing states because it really comes down to five or six states in the general election, and even more so, the independent voters in that election, regardless of demographics of that independent voting base.
