‘He’s in Charge of the Country’: CNN’s Dana Bash Rejects Dem Pollster’s Excuse for Biden’s Struggles
CNN’s Dana Bash was not open to a Democratic pollster’s excuse for voters’ lack of enthusiasm for President Joe Biden on Inside Politics Wednesday.
After playing a clip of voters in a focus group using the words “overwhelmed,” “aggravation,” “exasperated,” “indifferent,” “hopeless,” and “underwhelmed” to describe how they feel about Biden, Bash asked Anna Greenberg of GQR Insights & Action how Democrats should push back on voters’ impression of Biden.
“Well, I’ve also been doing a lot of focus groups,” began Greenberg. “And that’s how they feel about the country too, not just Joe Biden –”
“He’s in charge of the country,” interjected Bash, matter-of-factly.
“I’m just saying it’s a broader issue than just that,” replied Greenberg before going on to acknowledge the challenges Biden faces. “If you’re younger, lower income, especially lower income Hispanic voters, this economy’s not been great for you. And so and what you see happening, whether it’s, you know, $35 insulin for seniors doesn’t help you, it helps seniors, right?”
“A lot of the really big accomplishments, you know, whether it’s the student loan debt, if you didn’t go to college, it didn’t help you, right? And so I think that there, it is a realistic assessment of how this economy is working for them,” she continued. “Layer on top of that those are the same groups that are always lower information voters, less likely to follow politics and less likely to vote. So it’s kind of a deadly combination of being disaffected economically and also being the kinds of folks who tend not to vote as much anyway.”
“I think figuring, you know, there are things that actually this administration has done for people who are younger, is not communicated them effectively,” argued Greenberg. “And I think there has to be a more concerted effort to have that conversation with younger people and not just accomplishments, but what are we going to do with systemic problems like the cost of housing that are not solvable in an instant, but there are things that are actually being done.”
