Joe Scarborough Calls on Anti-Trump Republicans to Embrace ‘Liberation Day’ After Musk-Backed Candidate Defeated: ‘They Don’t Have to Be Scared!’

Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough turned President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” on its head as he called on quietly anti-Trump Republicans to embrace the day as a victory after the Democratic defeat of an Elon Musk-backed State Supreme Court candidate in Wisconsin.

While Trump coined the name for April 2 in anticipation of the commencement of his tariffs, Scarborough’s rhetorical flip came after Susan Crawford’s victory secured liberals a 4-3 majority. Democrats have celebrated the win as a rebuke to Trump and Musk, who both backed her opponent, Brad Schimel.

The race, the first high-profile election of Trump’s second term, became the most expensive state Supreme Court contest in the country’s history, with Musk alone spending over $15 million and actively campaigning against Crawford.

On Wednesday’s Morning Joe, Scarborough, a former Republican congressman himself, argued that the victory was a “liberation” for Republican lawmakers too, adding that they didn’t need to be “scared” of political retribution from Trump or Musk anymore.

Speaking to the show’s panel he said:

Talk about Liberation Day, you know, this is Liberation Day for Republicans if they want to take it. They don’t have to be scared of Elon Musk. They can actually do their constituents biddings and when he says, ‘I’m going to come into your district’ [they can] say: ‘Great. I’ll win big just like that judge up in Wisconsin.
