Joe Scarborough Ridicules House GOP Over Speaker Chaos With Benny Hill’s ‘Yakety Sax’: ‘Memories That Will Last a Lunchtime!’
Sometimes, you just have to take a moment and appreciate the old gags when they do the best job of encapsulating the humorous absurdity of the times. Morning Joe understands this, based on how they made ‘Yakety Sax’ the soundtrack for House Republicans’ continuing failure to restart Congress.
The show aired a sped-up montage on Wednesday starring Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Steve Scalise (R-LA), Jim Jordan (R-OH), Tom Emmer (R-MN) and Mike Johnson (R-LA). The montage was set to the unmistakable sound of Benny Hill’s theme song, the apparent goal being to mock McCarthy’s ouster as House Speaker, and the GOP’s rallying behind Johnson after a streak of failed efforts to fill the void.
“My lord,” Mika Brzezinski said to sum up the clips. Joe Scarborough then invoked the wordplay of The Rutles by saying, “all of those potential speakers created memories that will last a lunchtime.”
