John Oliver Destroys Jay Leno’s ‘Civility’ Plea with Clips of His Disgusting Monica Lewinsky Jokes
John Oliver skinned alive Jay Leno‘s recent call for “civility” in late-night comedy by playing a string of revolting Monica Lewinsky jokes, for which Oliver says Leno has never apologized.
On Sunday night’s edition of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, Oliver tackled the issue of online shaming, and presented Lewinsky as patient zero in the phenomenon of people being pulled out of their private lives, and into a life-ruining public maelstrom.
Along the way, Oliver copped to his own participation in the decades-long pile on, but singled out former Tonight Show host Jay Leno as someone who trampled on Lewinsky and never apologized for it.
“Look, my hands are not clean here either,” Oliver said of the pile-on. “I wasn’t in the U.S. at the time, but 10 years after the fact I was in a Daily Show piece marking the 10th anniversary of the scandal above a graphic reading ’10 sucking years,’ which is gross, it’s gross.”
“And many comedians have since publicly expressed regret about things they said,” Oliver continued, “although one who hasn’t, and was among the most relentless, was Jay Leno.”
Oliver them played a string of clips featuring Leno making jokes like “Let’s see what’s going on with Monica, or as President Clinton calls her, my little humidor”; “1 million samples of DNA, they said this is the largest collection of DNA in the world, not counting Monica Lewinsky’s closet”; “And the humidity, man, I’ll tell you people’s clothes are stickier than Monica Lewinsky’s”; and “the Grammy for best organ recital went to Monica Lewinsky, ladies and gentlemen.”
Oliver noted that those bits have not aged well, and that they’re “pretty rough, especially coming from a guy who just this week complained about late night TV saying he’d like to see a ‘bit of civility’ come back.”
“You know, like that time he did a bit with a fake book about Lewinsky titled ‘The Slut in the Hat,” Oliver said, showing a graphic of said book. He added “If that’s what he means by civility, may I offer my new book, ‘Oh the Places You Can Go Fuck Yourself, Jay Leno.’ Look how civilized being. Look how civil this is.”
