John Oliver Mocks Plans to Arm Teachers as ‘Trump in A Nutshell’: A ‘Clearly Terrible Idea’

Last Week Tonight host John Oliver ripped Donald Trump for his “terrible idea” of arming teachers with guns to prevent school shootings, with the late night personality suggested the president is in denial about the actual problem.

“That is Donald Trump in a nutshell: proposing a terrible idea in a tone-deaf way, then refusing to acknowledge he just lost the popular vote,” Oliver said.

Trump has pushed his plan to arm teachers over the past several days as a response to outcries for action following the Parkland, Florida shooting that took the lives of 17 people. While speaking at the right-wing gathering CPAC last week, Trump proposed the idea of “well-trained, gun-adept teachers and coaches” with “concealed” weapons in schools.

“I mean, I don’t want to have a hundred guards with rifles standing all over the school. You do a concealed carry permit,” Trump said. “This would be a major deterrent, because these people are inherently cowards.”

Oliver responded this plan with mockery and bewilderment, saying:

“Trump’s support for this clearly terrible idea seemed to develop over the week. He actually focus-grouped it on Wednesday during a listening session featuring survivors of the shooting—a session, incidentally, for which his own notes included a reminder to say ‘I hear you,’ which is what you might write down if you were a robot pretending to be a person pretending to be a robot pretending to be a person.”
