MSNBC Hosts Pile on Embattled Chuck Schumer in Fiery Commentary: ‘Folded Like a Paper Napkin’

MSNBC hosts piled on embattled Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Sunday with Symone Sanders-Townsend saying the Democratic leader “folded” to President Donald Trump “like a paper napkin.”

Schumer took flak from within his own ranks last week when he announced he would support the GOP-led continuing resolution to fund the government through most of the remaining year.

The New Yorker drew the ire of Democratic pundits, his Senate colleagues, and dozens of House Democrats. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries actually declined to answer a question about whether it was time for the party to find new leaders in the upper chamber on Friday.

CNN’s Van Jones framed Schumer’s support for the CR as him having “radically misread the room.” The leader reportedly worked with Senate Republicans in order to avoid his party being blamed for a government shutdown.

On MSNBC’s The Weekend Saturday, Sanders-Townsend was as unforgiving as anyone while reading through some of what was in the GOP funding bill with hosts Alicia Menendez and Michael Steele.

Sanders-Townsend noted the bill cuts some funding from Washington, where she lives, and said, “I’m pissed.” She also suggested Schumer might motivate her to leave the Democratic Party:

There’s actually little that the Senate minority leader can say, and the ten Democrats that voted with the Republicans can say, to appease somebody like me. I’m about to change my registration to independent, first and foremost. Shout out to High King Jeffries, though, because the congressional Democrats stayed together.

In 2024, Democrats ran on warnings that Trump was going to destroy democracy, and now that he and his team are very much in the process of doing just that, these same politicians are questioning whether or not to stand up to him and his party at one of the first opportunities they have to meaningfully do so. The only opportunity, I would add, there’s not another option for Senate or Democratic or Senate Democrats or House Democrats to effectively push back. This was it! They blew it! The Democratic Tea Party was born the same day that Chuck Schumer took to that podium to read that very well-crafted statement that told us he folded like a paper napkin.
