Neal Katyal Hits Barr for Concluding ‘Within 48 Hours’ There Was No Obstruction: I Have ‘Grave Concerns’

Speaking on MSNBC shortly after Attorney General William Barr released the summary findings of Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s report, former acting Solicitor General and MSNBC legal analyst Neal Katyal said that the Attorney General’s letter gave him “grave concerns.”

Katyal’s response was prompted by MSNBC host Katy Tur asking “Do you trust the assessment of Attorney General William Barr and deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein?”

“I really wanted to trust them, but quite honestly this letter caused me much more concern, grave concerns, really,” Katyal said.

He further explained: “Because remember Mueller after two years of investigation doesn’t draw conclusion one way or the other on obstruction of justice, he says there’s evidence on both sides and then you have Attorney General Barr within 48 hours of receiving this saying I conclude that the evidence isn’t there and in particular, he’s says there’s not evidence of Trump’s intent.”

He then asked, “Now how the heck does he determine in 48 hours after a two-year investigation and particularly without trying to interview Trump?”

Katyal further stressed that this is going to lead to concerns among the American public that there is a “whitewash” going on here.

“I think there has to be congressional testimony by Barr,” he said. “I think there will have to be Mueller coming forward, too, and letting the American public see the report but absolutely the letter raises far more concerns than it does provide answers.”

Tur then noted that previously Katyal had said to trust Barr.

“First of all I never said every American should trust Barr,” Katyal replied. “I hoped he would do the right thing on Friday when he released the initial statement. I thought that was a good statement. But I don’t think I’ve ever gone further than that. I do think that here we do, I think there is reason to be very concerned given what he wrote here.”
