Newsom Crashes Trump’s Arrival in Los Angeles To Welcome Him on the Tarmac
Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom greeted President Donald Trump on a tarmac in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon as the latter arrived to tour the devastation of this month’s wildfires.
A Fox News camera caught the moment Newsom, who was not invited by Trump, spoke face-to-face with the new president the moment he exited Air Force One.
The governor and the president exchanged words and an embrace before they both spoke to the media together. Trump threatened to withhold aid for California if his conditions for federal funding were not met earlier in the day.
One of those conditions is that California store more water for emergencies – a condition Newsom later said was categorically false. Neither man brought up the issue during a brief but cordial joint presser.
After Trump said it appeared as if the parts of Los Angeles County “got hit by a bomb,” Newsom agreed.
“I appreciate the governor coming out and meeting me, Gavin, very much,” Trump said. “And we will be talking a little bit.”
“Most importantly, thank you for being here,” Newsom responded. “It means a great deal to all of us. And not just the folks in Palisades. The folks in Altadena that were devastated. We are going to need your support. We’re going to need your help. You were there for us during COVID. I don’t forget that and I have all the expectations that we’ll be able to work together to get this speedy recovery.”
Trump responded, “We will, we’re gonna get it done.”
The president told reporters hours earlier in North Carolina that Newsom was not invited as he prepared to tour Los Angeles County.
Newsom said earlier this month he would welcome Trump to California with “respect and an open hand” while also blasting him for politicizing the fires. Trump has blamed the governor’s environmental policies for causing or exacerbating the blazes while referring to him as “Newscum.”
