Nikki Haley: I Let Trump Be ‘Unpredictable’ So I Could ‘Get the Job Done’ at the U.N.

Nikki Haley told NBC’s Craig Melvin on Wednesday that she used President Trump‘s bombastic style to her advantage while dealing with other countries as Ambassador to the United Nations.

In a broad-range interview as she prepares to exit her role, Haley said Russia’s international conduct is making it “impossible” to have a relationship with them, and that she blames Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for Jamal Khashoggi‘s death. Shortly after Haley remarked that she has a different political style from Trump, Melvin asked her if she was the “good cop” to the president’s “bad cop” in diplomatic engagements with the U.N.

“If I needed to pick up the phone and say, ‘this is what I’m going to do, are you good with this,’ we kinda partnered in that. He would ratchet up the rhetoric and I would go back to the ambassadors and say ‘He’s pretty upset. I can’t promise you what he’s going to do or not, but I tell you if we do these sanctions, it will keep him from going too far’…I was trying to get the job done, and I got the job done by being truthful, but also by letting him be unpredictable and not showing our cards.”
