Samantha Bee explained last night that the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union shows that Donald Trump can, in fact, win the American election through the power of nationalist rhetoric.
The Full Frontal host used her segment last night to take a look at the xenophobia and anti-globalist economic elements attached to the Brexit movement. Beyond that, however, Bee pointed out that Britain’s decision has several parallels to the current state of the 2016 election.
“While the Brits were waking up in the ruins of their nation, and saying ‘Oh God, what have we done?’ a lot of Americans were looking over and saying ‘Oh God, what are we about to do?’”
After bringing in Doctor Who‘s David Tennant to mock Trump’s panned reaction to Brexit, Bee went on to explore how the vote has caused certain British citizens to be emboldened in their nationalist or racially-charged tendencies.
“That is really the worst outcome of Brexit,” Bee said. “It’s that the vote made these hateful morons think that over half the country agreed with them. This is why it’s not enough for Trump to lose. It has to be a f*cking landslide.”
