Sarah Sanders Ties Jussie Smollett Case to Covington Kids: ‘Another Sad Example of People’ Attacking Trump
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders called actor Jussie Smollett’s allegedly staged hate crime just “another sad example” of people wanting to attack President Donald Trump.
“There were so many people, including a lot of leadership from the Democrat Party, everybody from Nancy Pelosi, Cory Booker and a number of others, mostly those running for president that quickly came out and attacked the president, blamed the president,” Sanders told the hosts of Fox & Friends during an interview this morning.
“In fact, as we learned more, it certainly seems like the only person to blame in this case is Smollett. It is another sad example of people so quick to want to attack and come after this president,” she added. “Much like you saw with the Covington kids and certainly with this case as well. And the president is pushing back.”
Smollett has been charged by the Chicago PD for filing a false police report in connection to the fake incident, in which he falsely claimed to have been a victim of a homophobic and racist attack carried out by Trump supporters. While most of the public figures who backed Smollett when the story first came out have since condemned his actions, the Empire actor is standing by his claims of innocence — even doubling down while speaking in front of colleagues last night, per a report from CNN.
Trump attacked Smollett on Twitter yesterday, asking the actor “about MAGA and the tens of millions of people you insulted with your racist and dangerous comments.”
