Scarborough Mocks WH Over Immigration Talks: Trump’s Staff Treat Him Like He’s a ‘Blubbery Old Man’

Morning Joe opened Monday’s episode with a look at the latest New York Times report looking inside President Donald Trump’s deliberations on the government shutdown — and Joe Scarborough was scathing in his conclusions about the president and his staff.

The Times’ Maggie Haberman reported on Sunday that Trump has been close to striking a deal on DACA in the past few weeks, only to have that progress upended by White House staff — namely Chief of Staff John Kelly and policy adviser Stephen Miller.

“The president had a Chinese dinner with Democrats, talked once again about wanting to extend legal status to Dreamers, staff members quickly ran behind him again like he was some fool, like he’s some bumpkin, some idiot who doesn’t know what he wants to do,” Scarborough said, “rushed behind him, killed the deal again.”

Scarborough continued that in recent negotiations, Trump told lawmakers he was open to whatever bipartisan deal they came up with.

“The president this time kept staff members out of the room because they treat him like he’s just a fool, like he’s just an idiot, like he’s a stupid, old, blubbery old man who doesn’t know what he’s doing,” Scarborough said. “Like he’s the weakest leader on the planet.”

“So Donald Trump said, ‘I’m just going to have Chuck Schumer come in and we’re going to talk one-on-one, and I’m not going to let these staff members treat me like I have pre-dementia, even though they all run around saying I have pre-dementia. I’ve got a doctor that says I don’t have pre-dementia, so maybe I don’t have pre-dementia. I’ll do this myself,’” the Morning Joe host continued.

Scarborough added that Trump brought in Democrats to work on an immigration deal, only to have his staff “reign him in.”

“The Republicans are stopping every one of these votes because they want to make a point,” Scarborough said. “But they’re not exactly sure what point they want to make because we have a president of the United States that is being led around by his staff who obviously think that he’s not fit to be president of the United States, because he makes deals and they break them.”

“So that’s where we are this morning.”
