Sen. Ben Sasse Praises Trump Over SCOTUS Picks Kavanaugh and Gorsuch: He’s ‘Done a Great Job’

Republican Nebraska Senator and frequent Trump critic Ben Sasse praised the president over his nomination to the Supreme Court.

President Donald Trump revealed during a primetime announcement on Monday night that D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Brett Kavanaugh was chosen to fill Justice Anthony Kennedy‘s seat after he retires later this month.

When asked by Fox News anchor Shannon Bream of what he thought about Trump’s SCOTUS nominees thus far, Sasse believes the president has “done a great job.”

“I think the precedent he set with this list of now 25 that he campaigned on will be a great thing to go forward in presidential politics in American life,” Sasse said. “One of the fundamental powers the president has is to nominate people who if confirmed will serve for a lifetime and telling voters who you’d pick. It’s a really good tradition and the president has stuck to his list, so I applaud it.”

The senator mocked the protestors he engaged with after the 2017 nomination of Justice Neil Gorsuch for their “mad lib” signs that had names scratched off with Sharpies.

“This isn’t the apocalypse. This is a chance to teach our kids basic civics and to celebrate checks and balances,” Sasse told Bream.

He expressed fear that the treatment of Kavanaugh will resemble the treatment given to Judge Robert Bork, whose nomination was demonized and blocked by Senate Democrats in 1987 and ultimately paved the way for Kennedy’s occupancy on the Supreme Court.
