Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary Lights Up Kamala Harris’s ‘Un-American’ Economic Plan: ‘Beyond Bad, It’s Insane’
Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary called Vice President Kamala Harris’s economic agenda “un-American” and bound for disaster.
Harris announced multiple economic policies last week and critics have mainly taken issue with the vice president’s plan to pass a federal ban on “price gouging” in the food industry. Harris partially blamed inflation on companies “exploiting crises.”
“The best way to describe it is un-American,” O’Leary said.
The venture capitalist argued there is no way to actually monitor this system or to introduce enough bans that more costs won’t be shifted to the consumer.
“In America, we don’t tell a farmer what to sell his apple for and we don’t tell a grocer what to sell it for. That’s how our economy works. We don’t have the ministry of grocery pricing. There is no way to monitor this,” he said. “We tried it in the ’70s, they tried it in the late ’80s in the Soviet Union, they’ve been trying it in Venezuela. It leads to shortages and hyperinflation. This policy is beyond bad, it’s insane.”
O’Leary predicted the actual policy will go “nowhere.”
“I get why she’s doing it, it’s populist, but we are all waiting for when she has to sit in front of you, a reporter, who’ll ask her how she’s going to implement this. That’s when this falls apart. There is no way to do this,” he said. “Every time it is tried, it has ended up in an absolute catastrophe.”
Harris said her plan would include “penalties” for food companies that “break the rules.”
“I will work to pass the first-ever federal ban on price gouging on food. My plan will include new penalties for opportunistic companies that exploit crises and break the rules, and we will support smaller food businesses that are trying to play by the rules and get ahead,” she said.
