Smerconish Scolds Law Enforcement For Laughing at Trump’s Media Attacks: ‘Cannot Be the New Normal’
Yesterday morning, prior to delivering a speech at the FBI National Graduation Academy, President Donald Trump slammed the federal law enforcement bureau, stating that it was a “shame what’s happened” to it while declaring that many people were “very angry.” Of course, an hour later at the speech itself, POTUS told those in attendance that he had their back while receiving applause and laughter for attacking the media.
At the top of his program this morning, CNN’s Michael Smerconish took aim at not only the president for using his speech to once again go after the press but also at law enforcement officers for applauding Trump.
Smerconish first highlighted how Trump used what should have been a solemn ceremony in front of the CIA memorial wall back in January to brag about how many times he made the cover of TIME Magazine while attacking the “dishonest media.” He then contrasted that with what we witnessed at the FBI ceremony yesterday.
“The president again violated the time and place rule that many of our parents instill in us,” Smerconish noted. “We come to expect this from him. Equally troubling is the laughter and the applause. This cannot be the new normal.”
He continued, “These were not kids. The folks in that room are adults in their 40s and 50s. The law enforcement communities need to remain above politics and to be perceived beyond our approach. When they feed over the president’s overly political lines, they cause a lack of confidence in their own nonpartisanship.”
