South Park to Open New Season by Taking on Charlottesville, White Nationalism

South Park is coming back this week, and their new season will kick off with a satirical take on white nationalism after the events of Charlottesville.

In a preview for the season premiere “White People Renovating Houses”, the show depicts the tiki torch-wielding white supremacists and pro-Confederate marchers involved with the violence that took place in Charlottesville, VA. The episode’s description also says that the plot will involve Randy Marsh coming to grips with what it means to be white in current American society.

While social commentary is still on the table, the creators of South Park have said they are unlikely to delve as far into national politics as they did last year. This comes after the show’s previous season ended up gravitating around Donald Trump‘s victory in the 2016 election.

The teaser for the new season comes after a trailer was released for the video game South Park: The Fractured But Whole. The game includes just as much racial satire as the show, as evidenced by the fact that the difficulty level is based on the skin color of the player’s custom character.

The new season launches on Wednesday at 10 P.M. ET.
