Stephen Colbert Lampoons ’60 Minutes’ Opening Ahead of Kamala Harris Interview: ‘We Also Invited Donald Trump to Go F*ck Himself’

Stephen Colbert began Tuesday’s episode of The Late Show with a parody of 60 Minutes’ cold open explaining why Donald Trump backed out of an interview.

On Monday, CBS aired a special edition of 60 Minutes featuring interviews with Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. The episode was set to include both Harris and Trump, but the former president backed out after initially accepting the invite.

According to 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley, Trump’s campaign “complained that we would fact-check the interview.” Then, Trump demanded an apology for a 2020 interview in which correspondent Lesley Stahl said Hunter Biden’s laptop came from Russia. That, Pelley noted, was never said.

As part of her week of extensive media appearances, Harris on Tuesday joined The Late Show. Before she was introduced, however, Colbert began the episode just as Pelley did.

“Good evening,” Colbert began. “It has been a tradition here at The Late Show since yesterday that the major party candidates sit down with me for an interview in October. We invited Kamala Harris to be our guest this evening, and she accepted. That interview in a moment.

“In the interest of fairness, we also invited former President Donald Trump to go f-ck himself. He declined our offer.”
