Conservative commentators Tara Setmayer and Ed Martin had a fiery clash tonight when the former called Roy Moore a child molester during a CNN panel.
Don Lemon began the segment by going over the news that the Republican National Committee has decided to support Moore’s campaign again despite the controversy still hovering over him. Setmayer got first crack at this development, and she lamented “I’m watching the Republican Party destroy itself.”
“The tribalism that we are seeing within the party, what’s happening in Alabama, the fact that the national party now is backing this incredibly accused child molester is despicable,” Setmayer said.
Martin groaned at those remarks, and he joined the fray by arguing that the RNC is trying to cover their own bases after they “quit early with no good reason.” Martin continued to say that calling Moore a child molester is “as breathtaking an insult and slur as anything you can say,” since the senate candidate’s alleged misbehavior is still based on accusations
Setmayer proceeded lock horns with Martin by asking him “how much more evidence do you need?” When Martin argued that there was no evidence, Setmayer shot back by saying “he’s a liar” before cycling through a list of inconsistencies and articles of proof from Moore’s past. This included Washington Post‘s most recent article on the matter, in which one of Moore’s accusers dug up a graduation note he sent her at the time of their relationship years ago.
Martin dismissed Setmayer’s points as a rant, which was met with a very snarky “those are facts, not a rant.” He continued to argue that Moore’s accusers have lots of discrepancies in their claims, and that its “absolutely despicable” to call him a child molester.
