Trump Rails Against ‘Fake News’ Again After Comments Leaked: ‘Off the Record’ Is a ‘Term of Honor’
During a Securing Americans’ Retirement event in Charlotte, North Carolina on Friday, President Donald Trump expanded on his off the records comments made to Bloomberg during an interview in the Oval Office.
In his comments with Bloomberg Thursday, as reported by the Toronto Star, Trump said he wasn’t willing to compromise with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government on NAFTA, although he wouldn’t say that publicly.
Commenting on those off the record remarks, Trump said this during the event:
“I gave an interview yesterday to Bloomberg Business, and I said off the record, and I made a statement about Canada which is fine because I love Canada but they have taken advantage of our country for many years. They have tremendous, tremendous trade barriers. They have tremendous tariffs. Dairy products, — Almost 300% tariff. Nobody talks about that. Nobody says that. They say, oh Canada, we love Canada. I do too. I even love their national anthem. It’s called, very appropriately, O Canada. Would you like me to sing it?”
The President then noted that it was “unbelievable” that his off the records comments ended up in print but did not deny the words were his:
“It said off the record, I said something strong, that is my belief. They violated it and they said they were violating it. It is unbelievable what is happening with the fake news. It is unbelievable. When you say off the record, that is a very––it is not a legal term but it is a term of honor. So when I say off the record, here’s the story in order really to save time, I don’t want to waste a lot of time, and then they say, they actually printed my off the record.”
The president then concluded: “These are very dishonorable people. But I said, in the end it is okay, because at least Canada knows how I feel. So it’s fine. It’s fine. It’s true.”
