UAW President Tells CNN He Can’t See ‘Any Way in Hell a Union Would Endorse’ Trump: ‘Stands Against Everything Working Class People Stand For’
United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain told CNN host Kaitlan Collins he couldn’t see “any way in hell a union would endorse” former President Donald Trump on Thursday as Trump “stands against everything working class people stand for.”
After Collins asked Fain “what it would say for the labor movement overall” if International Brotherhood of Teamsters President Sean O’Brien opted to endorse Trump, Fain said, “I’m not gonna try to answer for Sean O’Brien, but I would 100% bet that I can’t see any way in hell a union would endorse Donald Trump for president.”
He continued:
The man stands against everything that working-class people stand for, that organized labor stands for. You know, look, they chose to entertain visiting with candidates, and that’s a path they chose. I mean, I saw no point in it because I look at the track record of Donald Trump. I mean, his two favorite words are, “You’re fired.” He’s the boss, he represents the billionaire class. That’s his base, and so when you look at the two candidates on our end, you know, Joe Biden has a history of betting on the American worker, standing with the American worker, just as he did in our strike this year.
When Donald Trump was president, GM was on strike for 40 days and Donald Trump was AWOL. He never said a word, never did a thing. When it came to saving communities, Donald Trump didn’t do a thing to help Lordstown Assembly back when that plant closed in Ohio in ’19 when Trump was president. But you look at President Biden, he stood with us over in Belvidere, Illinois this year. We took one plant that was going to close, now we have two plants gonna be built there, and on top of that we saved the community.
Fain concluded, “So the contrast couldn’t be any more different between these two, and when it comes to organized labor, I can’t fathom any union would ever stand for Donald Trump.”
O’Brien and the Teamsters, who endorsed Biden in the 2020 election, met with Trump on Wednesday as the union weighs up which candidate to back in 2024.
“We had a very strong meeting with the Teamsters,” said Trump following the meeting, claiming there was a “good shot” the union would back his campaign.
