‘Artists For Ceasefire’: Annie Lennox Calls For Peace During Grammy Tribute To Sinéad O’Connor
Singer Annie Lennox brought the 2024 Grammy Awards to a pause, with a fervent plea for peace amidst her powerful tribute to late Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor.
Mid-performance of O’Connor’s hit Nothing Compares 2 U, the Eurythmics icon stopped singing to shout: “Artists for ceasefire! Peace in the world.”
Her call echoed the recent mass calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, resonating as over 10,000 pro-Palestine supporters had taken to the streets of central London.
In a call by actors and singers to action back in December, Lennox joined forces with stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Joaquin Phoenix, Janelle Monáe, and Dua Lipa, penned an open letter to President Biden, urging for “an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel before another life is lost.” The group issued their plea under the collective name of Artists4Ceasefire.
The Grammy’s In Memoriam segment, always a reflective highlight, saw other memorable tributes to Tony Bennett and Tina Turner.
The 66th annual Grammys ceremony saw wins for Taylor Swift, SZA, Miley Cyrus, 21 Savage, Billie Eilish, a Global Impact Award for Jay-Z and a surprise appearance by Canadian singer Celine Dion, who is battling a rare autoimmune neurological disorder.
Throughout the night performances were made by Joni Mitchell, Olivia Rodrigo and Stevie Wonder.
