State Dept Spox Thinks Media’s Anonymous Quotes Can Shove It

An anonymous administration source calling Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu “chickenshit” to the Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg sparked an obnoxious round of “who said it” in the political press Wednesday, to the point that State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki snarked at the overall use of anonymous quotes.

“These comments, as you know, were from an anonymous source and I don’t know who that individual was or what level they were at,” Psaki said at Wednesday’s briefing. “I’d also certainly take them with a grain of salt.”

A Reuters reporter then asked if the administration or the State Department was trying to track down who made the comments.

“No,” Psaki said. “There are anonymous sources in all of your sources every single day. If we spent all of our time working on that effort, we wouldn’t be working on diplomacy.”
