Al Sharpton And Bill O’Reilly Debate The Merits Of Glenn Beck’s Rally

video

Unless you get your news exclusively from Sean Hannity, you have most likely heard about Glenn Beck‘s “Restoring Honor” rally held last Saturday on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The event was initially designed by the Fox News host as a political rally to “reclaim the civil rights movement,” which raised the ire of Beck’s political foes, particularly since the rally coincided with the anniversary of MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

But Beck surprised people with a rally that focused more on religion than politics, which forced his political opponents – namely Al Sharpton to focus criticism on pre-rally rhetoric, as opposed to the rally itself, as he did with Bill O’Reilly last night.

It’s worth noting that Sharpton is not only a willing combatant with both O’Reilly and Beck on issues of justice and equality, particularly as it applies to civil rights. But Rev. Al and the Fox News hosts appear to embrace a mutual respect and civil discourse that belies the current political climate – or the standard rhetorical backs and forth between opposing political opinion media outlets. The following clip almost makes one wish that elected officials could debate, discuss and even disagree so effectively as Sharpton and O’Reilly do in the following clip.

    No, it wasn’t.

Looking at both Rev Sharpton’s rally and Beck’s rally, I have to say that Rev. Sharpton’s rally was filled with fear and had the undertone of hate.

Glen Beck, who I don’t usually agree with, had a positive message. Hell he raised millions of dollars for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation – Shaprton just raised fear.

What was the initial intent? Merely “restoring honor”?

It looks like it went of well, people had a good time, and money was raised for a good cause. It’d be nice if we could all move on.

  • Pablo

But Beck surprised people with a rally that focused more on religion than politics

I couldn’t begin to count the times he said it would not be a political event. I was therefore not the least bit surprised to find that it was not a political event. YMMV, apparently.

  • paulmdoro

And I agree Liberty I wish Sharpton would shut up and go away.

No, not that. I think I read about it on the net somewhere. I can’t remember because no one is talking about it and I can’t find any mention of it anywhere.

Al is very condescending with his remarks ‘The black community always needs help’ ‘We are always behind’ ‘We are not receiving enough support’ Shut the hell up Al. There are strong black men, black women, black boys, and black girls maybe you should focus on them and speak about their success in life. We cannot help anyone who is not willing to help themselves. Successful black people are always overshadowed by the lazy b/c of people like Al Sharpton.

    Moving on:

If people awaken and turn around and see that we have lost our way, and they do something about it in their own lives, not through politics but in their own lives, then it’s a — it’s an important day. Otherwise, it was just a nice day out in the sunshine.

I am however curious about Beck sort of reinventing himself as a religious leader. I am going to repost this here.

Why is Beck suddenly shifting his mission to something more overtly religious while attacking the president’s religious beliefs? Is that what the tea party and Beck’s many followers want from him? He obviously did a great job carving out a niche for himself going after progressives and government spending, etc. Religion and faith are different matters altogether. So why this and why now? Isn’t religion a private matter and best left to the individual and whatever beliefs they may or may not have?

I also think it’s interesting that some of the conservative religious figures Beck invited to the rally don’t even consider him a Christian. Richard Land, for instance, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, said he does not believe Mormons are Christians. Why is someone whose own religious beliefs are questioned and doubted openly bashing the president’s?

If Sharpton were REALLY a “civil rights leader”, the first thing he would have done when he heard about Beck’s rally was contact him and see if they could work together on it. THAT would have been what MLK was all about.

But obviously he didn’t do that. His first reaction was hostility, and a very short-lived attempt to get Beck’s permit revoked.

The man is still a hustler in the mold of the Tawana Brawley case. Hopefully, more Blacks will begin to see this, and begin to see that people who follow Sharpton really aren’t getting ahead (unless they are part of Sharpton’s network of race hustlers living off of extortion fees).

I don’t think we can know for sure what MLK would have done. Obviously Sharpton is good at drawing attention to himself and still has a following, but is it really that large? I get the feeling he works hard to draw attention to himself specifically because he lacks widespread influence.

If you had any clue as to what Glen Beck’s show was all about, you’d refrain from making such a ridiculous post. Beck has had several shows covering the faith of our founding fathers despite the efforts of Progressives to eliminate faith and religion from the public square.

Given the fact part of the Obama narrative of is presidential campaign was he spent 20 years in Jeremiah Wright’s church and that Wright was his spiritual mentor who presided over his marriage and baptized his children. The lamestream press totally glossed over the fact that Wright’s church was founded on Black Liberation Theology and how it would affect Obama’s political philosophy.

I find it curious that you never considered the fact the religious leaders that attended the Beck rally represented ALL faiths, but you chose to concentrate on the Christian elements of those in attendance. I do realize Progressives and Liberals want to find conflict within the rally so they could report it as one big political bashfest. In contrast, the Al Sharpton rally was political and an attempt to further discredit the Tea Party movement and was truly divisive. Beck’s “Restoring Honor” was to rally Americans around the flag and use God as the common ground. I would say finding that common ground was truly in the spirit of Martin Luther King.

Where are the Japanese, Chinese, or Irish Americans leaders complaining about racism? You just don’t see it. Paul, that statement left out a word. The King will call out ‘white’ racists. The black ones, such as Farrakhan, he gives a pass, and if you even mention Farrakhan’s name, the King will either call you a racist, or respond with such thoughtful and well-reasoned responses as “Giddyup”.

Right wingers can sit here and DENY their own eyes and ears all they like. The man said it. There is documentation that he said it.

Gee, why are those not complete Beck quotes? Oh, because it’s Media Matters (Truth Doesn’t) and that’s what they do.

    Cobra,
Everything you described, the left did to Bush. You’re seeing racism because you WANT to see it and have been trained to see it everywhere. It’s sad really.

Really? The Left wing decided they should repeal the 14th Amendment and the Civil Rights Act while Bush was in office?

The Left Wing wanted Confederate History Month, while Bush was in office?

The Left Wing wanted all Brown people in Arizona to carry papers with them at all times?

Those quotes are PLENTY. They REFUTE your statement, and indict Glenn Beck as the medicated, alcoholic college dropout that you right wingers view as the next messiah.

When does Farrakhan’s show on Fox News air? Farrakhan drew FAR more people to a rally in Washington than Beck did.

D REX, that’s a total mischaracterization of Beck’s rally. There is a huge difference between the quasi/pseudo Libertarianism that Beck espouses and Nazism, and you should acknowledge that. Beck is actually helping, in his own reactionary way, race relations in the country. He’s a race-baiter, and that’s despicable, but there were blacks at his rally and one was a featured speaker.

And there were Blacks who fought for the Confederacy. Most SANE African-Americans didn’t want THEM to succeed, either.

    That quote was from 1911.

    Nineteen freaking eleven!

The people that he’s talking about have kept alive the victim mentality in the black community. Why is it that most black “leaders” today are still complaining about perceived racism everywhere? You just don’t see it. To this day, when a black person strives to do well in school or in a career, they are demeaned by their own community as, “acting white.” It’s very sad.

That’s right. Blacks don’t need no stinkin’ civil rights. Booker T. Washington’s philosophy was to go along to get along, and suffer whatever indignity the White man heaps upon them.

” Where are the Japanese, Chinese, or Irish Americans leaders complaining about racism? “

There were RIOTS IN THE STREETS when Irish Immigrants were rising in power and influence.

    Google search “nativist riots”.

“To this day, when a black person strives to do well in school or in a career, they are demeaned by their own community as, “acting white.” It’s very sad”

Another lie from hell. President Barack Obama graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard Law, and got 96% of the Black Vote. Michelle Obama graduated with honors from Princeton University and is one of the most popular figures in Black America. There are pockets of ignorant folks who are anti-intellectual, but Black people don’t have a corner on that market.

Come with some more anti-Black rhetoric, Heimerji. Don’t hold back or edit yourself. Bring it. Goes for you, too, Constantly.

    You won’t find me wanting.

“There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do do not want to lose their jobs. ”
    - Booker T Washington

GOLDEN! Even Dr. Washington realized that professional victims (i.e. Sharpton, Jackson, Wright, Farrahan, Jackson Jr., Rangel, and -0bama) infested the his race.
