Protests over the police death of Freddie Gray had simmered over the weekend, and broke out into looting and burning following Gray’s funeral yesterday. Gray was stopped by police two weeks ago for unspecified reasons; during the ensuing police ride his spine was “virtually” severed, and he died from the injury last weekend. No explanation has been given for how Gray received the injury; the police officers involved have been suspended pending an investigation.
Last night Maryland Governor Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency and dispatched the National Guard. A curfew is in effect for the rest of the week.
