dzhokhar tsarnaevToday, after fourteen hours of deliberation, a jury sentenced Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death on six counts.

Tsarnaev was earlier found guilty on all thirty counts levied against him, seventeen of which carried the possibility of the death penalty. Tsarnaev’s lawyer argued that he was strong-armed into the attacks by his radicalized brother Tamerlan, while the prosecution claim that he was a willing participant. The prosecution has called for the death penalty to be applied.

Along with his brother, Tsarnaev detonated two bombs at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon, which killed three and injured 264 others. During their attempt to escape Boston, they shot and killed a police officer and attacked other police officers with homemade bombs. Tamerlan was killed during the shootout, and Dzhokhar was found after an intensive manhunt.

Federal law mandates that the jury must unanimously vote to impose the death penalty, and any holdout would nullify the vote.
